CHIEF GUEST

Mr. Muhammad Naeem (Hilal e Imtiaz, Sitara e Imtiaz)

Chairman PAEC

It is a matter of immense pleasure that a joint cancer conference of Pakistan Society of Clinical Oncology (PSCO) and SAARC Federation of Oncology is being held in Pakistan. This conference will gather all Cancer Control Professionals from SAARC under one roof at a crucial time in the global fight against cancer. Despite the best efforts of doctors and scientists over decades we have yet to find a full cure for this scourge of mankind. Pakistan has made a very important contribution in the continuing struggle against cancer. Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission is operating 18 cancer hospitals all over the country which facilitates about 80 to 85% of total Pakistan Cancer Patients for early diagnostics and treatment within the reach of large populace of the country. I am sure that this conference will provide participants with even more opportunities to interact with impressive range of specialists from SAARC and will equip delegates with the necessary tools against cancer. It will also facilitate connections and networking opportunities among the delegates. I would like to express my thanks to the delegates/participants and organizers of the conference for their encouraging response. I hope this will become a continuous event. I wish you all the success in your noble endeavors.

Guest of Honor

Dr. S. M. Javed Akhtar, PoP, Member (Science)

Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission

This is worth noting occasion that a joint cancer conference of Pakistan Society of Clinical Oncology (PSCO) and SAARC Federation of Oncology (SFO) is being held in Pakistan. It is a privilege for me to welcome the delegates from SAARC as well as Pakistan. One of the most important peaceful uses of Nuclear Energy is in the field of medicine. Considering the fact, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission is engaged in treating cancer patients from all over the country through its eighteen dedicated medical centers. In these hospitals, both the diagnostic and therapeutic facilities are available under one roof. PAEC is also producing Iodine-131, Technetium-99m and other radiopharmaceuticals at Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology which are being supplied to most of the Cancer hospitals in Pakistan. I believe this event will help the respective faculty to collaborate in the field of Oncology to share updates & expertise. The deliberations during three days will make the participants updated with the recent developments in the field of oncology in SAARC region. Such events should take place more frequently. I am thank full to all individuals and delegates participating in this conference. I wish the organizers a successful scientific event

Patron in Chief PSCO

Prof. Emiratus. Syed Hassan Manzoor Zaidi

In 1986 a group of renowned International Oncologist gathered at Hyderabad under W.H.O for deliberation on oncology for the benefit of Pakistani Oncologist. This triggered a nucleus for formation of a Society of Oncologist in Pakistan. The Pakistan Society of Clinical Oncology came into existence in 2004. Over the years by the grace of GOD the number has grown into a blooming Society – “The Pakistan Society of Clinical Oncology”. Regular Annual Conferences have been held in different parts of Pakistan. The 20th Annual Conference is being held at Karachi from 9th to 11th October 2015. This year Pakistan is the host for SAARC Federation of Oncology. The unfortunate earthquake tragedy in Nepal this year is deeply regretted our sympathies are with the Nepalese colleagues & we hope some of them will join us. We are also looking forward to participation by others SAARC Federation members. This is a great event for the Oncologist where experiences and views are exchanged & shared by National & International experts.
The organizing committee under chairmanship of Dr. Muhammad Ali Memon has worked hard in preparing an interesting meeting. We look forward to a good fruitful and successful meeting. I wish the organizers all the best as this is a big challenge. Hoping to see you at Karachi. On 9th to 11th October 2015.
Yours sincerely

It is my great pleasure to welcome you all at the 10th SAARC Federation of Oncologists (SFO) and 20th Pakistan Society of Clinical Oncologists (PSCO) International Conference being held in Karachi, Pakistan from 9th to 11th October 2015. Having a long association with Pakistan society of clinical oncology for the last 29 years since its inception in Feb 1986 it gives me immense pleasure to write these few lines on the occasion of forthcoming joint  meeting of PSCO and SAARC association of oncologists. These meetings are a source of learning the current standards of care and the state of the art for the expert and the novice. I am sure that the academic program and the deliberations of this meeting will go a long way in meeting its objectives. I congratulate Dr. Muhammad Ali Memon and his team of organizers for their untiring efforts to make this meeting a great success.

Assalam Alaikum
I am really happy to see that the leadership of SAARC Federation of Oncologist( SFO) under Pakistan Society of Clinical Oncology (PSCO) is arranging the 10th SFO conference. I am sure this conference will bring faculties from SAARC regions and also from other part of the globe to share their experiences about the cancer problem of this region. As per tradition Oncology Club, the founder organization and the Bangladesh chapter of SFO will give the ABMF Karim memorial Gold medal in remembrance of the founder of SFO late Emeritus Professor A. B. M. F. Karim to the best abstract from the young researcher of host country( Pakistan) to encourage the young generation so that they get more motivated and involved in cancer care. We all are fighting against cancer with our limited resources. May Allah help us in this battle. I wish all the success of the conference.

President PSCO

Dr. Arif Jamshed

It gives me immense pleasure to invite you to participate in the20th Pakistan Society of Clinical Oncology (PSCO) and 10th SAARC Federation of Oncology (SFO) annual meeting to be held in the beautiful historic city of Karachi, Pakistan from 9th to 11th October 2015. Over the years, SFO has nurtured friendships, strengthened bonds, bridged the gaps and promoted the goals set by the erstwhile founders. It has helped us learn from each other whilst we also had opportunities to showcase our culture and heritage. I am thankful to the organizing committee for their hard work and enthusiastic preparation for the joint conference, which makes us look forward to a grand academic experience. The meeting provides a platform for sharing experience, gathering knowledge and promoting research in our specialty.  We not only intend to provide a platform for exchanging experience and expertise in cancer treatment and patients care but also a change to communicate with professionals from our region. The conference venue, Karachi is the 2nd largest city in the world by population.  It is the main sea port and financial centre of the country and is also known as the “city of lights” due to the city’s night life for which it is famous as the city which never sleeps.

On behalf of PSCO and SFO, I welcome you to Karachi!

General Secretary PSCO

Dr Mohammad Faheem

In my capacity, as the General Secretary PSCO it is indeed a matter of immense pleasure and honor to welcome all the national and international participants to PSCO conference 2015 being held at Karachi in collaboration with SAARC Federation of Oncology. Karachi is provincial capital of Sindh and business hub in the country. PSCO is regularly organizing conferences on annual basis with the aim of providing forum for local and foreign experts and budding oncologists to share their knowledge and results of research and thus trying to bring further improvement in the treatment of cancer. The conference is not only attended by oncologists but also by experts from other medical specialties. Cancer treatment is a dynamic and rapidly evolving field and thus keeping oncologists abreast of latest innovations in the fields of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy is of prime importance. Moreover cancer treatment is not the domain of single specialty. In this modern era nobody can treat a cancer patient sitting in isolation. Successful treatment of this devastating disease is possible only by making common consensus in multidisciplinary meetings which at the moment are being held in only a few cancer hospitals of Pakistan. This year’s conference theme “Continuous joint efforts- key to success” focuses not only on the same objective but also on working in close collaboration with neighboring countries so as to achieve cancer control in the country. I must salute all my friends in organizing committee who under supervision of Dr Mohammad Ali Memon have worked day and night and have put their zealous and untiring efforts to hold the conference. I hope the conference proves to be successful and will provide a real great platform for exchanging and utilizing the latest modes of treatment of cancer in future. I wish all the participants pleasant and happy stay in Karachi.

Past president PSCO

Prof. Dr. Shaharyar

It gives me immense pleasure to write these lines for Pakistan Society of Clinical Oncology.  In the past three decades, I have seen my seniors struggle to establish the discipline of Oncology in Pakistan and I have also struggled to contribute my part to promote the clinical oncology, but the progress has been slow. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the first world and possibly in Pakistan as well, but there is neither a comprehensive cancer control program in the country nor there sufficient emphasis on teaching and training of medical students and doctors. Teaching and training of Oncology in   Pakistan is at a critical juncture and demands for very unselfish approach to resolve the issues of undergraduate and post graduate education. In the vast majority of undergraduate medical colleges of country, there is no formal education about Cancer as oncology teachers and treatment set ups are not available.  Post graduate medical education is not being tailored to the needs of the country; instead the politically motivated small groups constantly try to promote their vested interests. We need to design an under graduate curriculum for implementation by Pakistan Medical & Dental Council. We also need to make College of Physicians & Surgeons realize and understand that the recommendations of the Faculty of Radiotherapy / Clinical Oncology need to be implemented in the best interest of the country, as it will provide the unmet need of providing cancer education and trained cancer treatment physicians. The Science of Oncology is also slow to grow with little or no organized multi institutional research being conducted in the country. I appreciate those who present their individual research in this Forum.  I also feel happy to note that foreign faculty is also participating. I am personally thankful to Muhammad Ali Memon for asking me, the immediate past president, to write these few lines.

Dr. Muhammad Ali Memon, MCPS, FCPS
Chairman Organizing Committee for ONCO2015 & Finance secretary PSCO

It is indeed an honor for me to organize such a prestigious event of professional & academic excellence, expected to be witness by renowned Oncologists of the region. There are quite a few experts from different parts of the world are expected to contribute their experiences in the conference. The pattern of cancer in the region of SAARC countries is different from other parts of the world so, as the theme of conference express, the success is only possible to control this threatening disease of cancer if we work together & share the regional issues in the management from prevention, early detection to management and rehabilitations. With the contribution of learned oncology & allied faculty, we hope for a productive, visionary activity of high quality to bring a practice changing event. In anticipation, I appreciate the confidence of my senior & junior colleagues of PSCO and SFO Faculty to support organization of the event. I believe & hope this meeting will be a step ahead to steeping progress in the field of oncology in the region

Dr. Ahmed Nadeem Abbasi

In the Name of Allah ; the Most Beneficent ,  the Most Merciful.
Peace be upon the Last Prophet of Allah , Hazrat Mohammad Mustafa (Sallalaho  Alaihi Wassalam)
Welcome to the City of Philanthropists, Karachi – the fifth largest city of the world. Peer reviewed oncology practice is being practiced and taught in our Institutes and our aim is to nurture carers who are patient centered. We are working on our weaker links, as strength of a chain is determined by the weakest Link. Site specific Tumor Boards are our target goal which we are trying to achieve. Site specific Tumor Boards are integral part of comprehensive oncological care provision .In the developing countries , we are not fully tuned into this important component of good clinical practice (GCP) which is definitely influencing our overall care outcomes . We are witnessing an initial phase of establishment of site specific Multi-Disciplinary Tumor Boards . We are still going through the teething problems which are bound to occur in a country where the concepts of patient centeredness are not yet very well understood by practicing clinicians. Exchange of scientific Ideas and integration of thought processes is required in order to achieve best results. Our Journey towards modernization of systems and processes will go on, Insha Allah ( By the Will of Almighty ). As Allama Iqbal ( Poet of the East ) said in this couplet :
A blossom can not thrive
In meadow full of trees,
Unless  some drops of dew
Ally with pleasant breeze. ( from Book : Zarb-e-Kaleem )

All guests are very warmly welcomed !!

The notion cancer means that death does not hold true and longer. Dr. Muhammad Khalid

Associate Professor & Head
Department of Clinical Oncology
Punjab Medical College/Allied Hospital Faisalabad

It is honor for me to inscribe few words about ONCO2015. Pakistan Society of Clinical Oncologists is a single largest and auspicious podium for practicing Oncologists to gather, meet and share the clinical experiences for better care of cancer patients. The day it was established PSCO is holding oncology conferences regularly and it has been actively engaged in offering up to date management for cancer patients all over the country, I must appreciate the efforts of all office bearers of PSCO and organizers of this meeting to bring national and international speakers under one roof to exchange latest research work in oncology and expertise especially SAARC countries. No doubt cancer diagnosis and treatment is beyond the reach of our most of cancer patients but one thing which is really needed is awareness about cancer. I wish for great success of ongoing PSCO meeting being held on Oct. 9-11, 2015 in Karachi.
